  • D.N. De Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital

D.N. De Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital

D.N. De Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, a distinguished institution renowned for its pioneering contributions to homoeopathic education. Under the governance of the Department of Health & Family Welfare, AYUSH Branch, Government of West Bengal, we have been leading the field of homoeopathy since our inception in October 1927. Initially named Dunham College of Homoeopathy, the institution was rechristened in January 1951 to honor its esteemed founder, Dr. D. N. De.

Our journey began in two spacious rooms at 135/3, Bowbazar Street (currently Bepin Behari Ganguly Street), Calcutta. The college, at its nascent stage, offered H.L.M.S. and H.M.B. courses, which were conducted at various shifts. Despite initial challenges such as the absence of a dedicated dissection hall—resolved by winter arrangements in Khardah—the institution thrived due to the unwavering dedication of Dr. D.N. De and his team of committed educators.

In 1936, an eminent homoeopath, Dr. Sanat Kumar Ghosh, joined forces with Dr. De, transitioning the college from a private to a public entity. By May of that year, the college relocated to 63, Upper Circular Road (now Acharya Prafulla Chandar Road), Calcutta. The same year marked the inauguration of a ten-bed Indoor Patient Department, facilitated by the generous support of the Calcutta Municipality.

The Indian Homoeopathic Medical Association (IHMA) was established in 1937, with Dr. D.N. De magnanimously transferring the college to IHMA, free of liabilities. His tenure as principal extended until 1940. Recognized as one of India’s premier institutions by a 1949 government enquiry, the college was officially renamed D.N. De Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital in January 1951, under the leadership and philanthropy of Sri Nirod Chandra Ghosh.

With the visionary leadership of Dr. D.N. Chatterjee, the institution secured government grants for research, establishing a strong foundation for academic excellence. In 1964, the Calcutta Municipality donated land at 12, Gobinda Khatick Road, facilitating the elevation of the college to a full-fledged homoeopathic medical institution. The subsequent construction of the hospital and college buildings culminated in the 1976 affiliation with Calcutta University and C.C.H. for degree programs in homoeopathy.

In 1994, the Government of West Bengal amalgamated both campuses to focus on the BHMS degree under the University of Calcutta. The M.D. Homoeopathy course commenced in 2006, further enhancing our academic offerings with research-oriented studies in collaboration with the Central Council for Homoeopathy.

Our institution is committed to advancing homoeopathic research, with a dedicated laboratory and research committee fostering scholarly pursuits. Many faculty members are registered Ph.D. scholars at The West Bengal University of Health Sciences. In 2018, we formalized an MOU with the Central Council for Homoeopathy to further elevate our research capabilities.

We regularly host postgraduate seminars featuring esteemed homoeopathic and modern medical practitioners from around the globe. Additionally, our outreach initiatives include medical camps and health awareness programs, underscoring our mission to alleviate human suffering and pursue the higher purposes of human existence.
